Director of Engineering


Edison Smart are searching for a Director of Engineering to lead high-performing engineering teams building a complex, live-service VR and SaaS product platform. This role combines technical leadership, strategic vision, and hands-on oversight of Unity, Full-Stack Web, and DevOps teams.


You will be responsible for the architecture, execution, and technical excellence across the product ecosystem, delivering a scalable, data-driven platform that enables rapid content development and robust SaaS functionality.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and scale three core engineering teams: Unity (VR/Desktop), Full-Stack Web, and DevOps (Build & Infrastructure)
  • Architecture & Technical Strategy: Define and drive the technical vision, enhancing modularity and scalability through configuration-as-code approaches
  • Content & Tooling Pipelines: Build tooling pipelines to accelerate content development and cross-team collaboration
  • Technical Standards: Set and enforce best practices across Unity/C#, React/Node, and AWS-based cloud infrastructure
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with executives, product, operations, content, and education teams to align the engineering roadmap with business goals
  • Team Development: Mentor engineering leaders, oversee hiring, onboarding, and career development of all engineers
  • Technology Focus: Stay current with VR, web technologies, and simulation trends to guide innovation


Requirements

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in senior leadership
  • Proven experience managing or architecting across Unity/C#, Full-Stack Web (React/Node), and DevOps (AWS, containers, CI/CD)
  • Experience leading large-scale, live-service commercial products or complex simulation systems
  • Expertise in Unity/C# architecture, profiling, and scalable system design
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-department collaboration skills
  • Eligible to work in the United States; occasional travel may be required

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in VR/AR or immersive technology development
  • Familiarity with healthcare, medical simulation, or related industries
  • Knowledge of agile methodologies and engineering management best practices
  • Experience leading distributed or remote-first teams

Location & Work Model

  • Full-time, remote within the United States
  • Expected work hours aligned with Pacific Standard Time
  • Occasional travel for conferences or leadership retreats


Compensation & Benefits

  • Target salary: $225,000–245,000, depending on experience
