In this role, you’ll deliver complex data solutions, contribute to enterprise-scale projects, and mentor more junior engineers. What you will do


As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality, enterprise-scale data solutions and supporting the technical success of projects.


This role blends:


  • Hands-on technical expertise in your core domain(s)
  • Consultancy and client-facing delivery
  • Mentorship of junior engineers and contribution to practice standards
  • Delivery accountability, balancing quality and efficiency


You will:


  • Design, develop, and support complex data pipelines and data platforms (Azure Databricks, Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Dedicated SQL Pools).
  • Ensure solutions meet standards for performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Provide technical guidance across projects, contributing to architecture and solution design.
  • Remain hands-on when tackling complex or critical technical challenges.
  • Contribute to defining and improving engineering practices, standards, CI/CD processes, and reusable frameworks.
  • Mentor and coach Engineers and Junior Engineers, sharing knowledge and fostering technical excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with client stakeholders and internal teams to ensure delivery aligns with business objectives.
  • Support delivery risk management, ensuring projects are completed on time and to the required standard.


Key responsibilities:


  • Develop and test high-quality, maintainable data solutions aligned with engineering standards.
  • Deliver data platforms and pipelines in Azure Data Platform, including Databricks, Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Dedicated SQL Pools.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and optimisation of data models, queries, and pipelines.
  • Implement best practices for code quality, testing, CI/CD, and reusable delivery components.
  • Mentor and support Junior Engineers, enabling technical progression and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with Lead Engineers and Principals to ensure alignment with practice standards and client requirements.
  • Participate in client workshops, discovery sessions, and technical discussions, contributing expertise to solution design.
  • Ensure technical solutions are robust, scalable, and commercially viable.


How you will do it


To be successful in this role you will be required to have the following:


Technical Expertise


  • Strong hands-on experience in modern Lakehouse and SQL/MPP architectures.
  • Solid knowledge of Azure Data Platform technologies:
  • Azure Databricks
  • Azure Data Factory
  • Microsoft Fabric
  • Azure Data Lake
  • Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency in Python, Spark, and SQL.
  • Experience in performance tuning, data optimisation, and cloud best practices.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, security, governance, and networking.


Consultancy & Collaboration Skills


  • Comfortable operating in client-facing environments.
  • Ability to translate technical solutions into business value.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical development within a team.


Certifications


  • Databricks Certified: Databricks Data Engineer Professional
  • Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate


Experience & Background


  • Demonstrable experience delivering enterprise-scale data solutions.
  • Track record of technical delivery across multiple projects or domains.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or supporting technical growth within a team.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).

Location(s)


We are a fully remote company but love spending time with our customers so we like to be present and on site with them when we can – at least two to three days a week.


All candidates must reside and be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role. We encourage flexible working in terms of both hours and location, with the expectation that employees may get together from time to time. Any required travel to clients will be covered by us.
